Unbelievable – German army lost confidential data – no further backups available

25. Juni 2007

Based on a report of the German magazin „ARD-Politikmagazins REPORT MAINZ“ the German army confirmed the loss of important secret documents caused by storage media problems. The documents contain important information about international army missions in the time between 1999 and 2003. So the army told: the storage media (tape drives) were no longer readable and a recovery was not successful. After the failed recovery the army destroyed those tapes in 2004. This history sounds like cover-up attempt and not as a truth. So the first question here is: Why is there no 2nd or 3rd level backup available? Unbelievable that such kind of sloppiness can happen at the military in a time, where each quality-certified enterprise must show secsond and third copies of the business data. Strangely, strangely – further information in the original message under: http://www.swr.de/report/presse/-/id=1197424/nid=1197424/did=2269908/kbr9uf/index.html
Hopefully the press/media brings more light into this story.
